Fight for Kieran McDonald's right to stay at Ochil Tower 18-21 programme

My son Kieran McDonald is nearly 18 years old and has Autism and learning disabilities. North Lanarkshire Council social work department are forcing Kieran to cut short a 3 year transition programme at Ochil Tower School in Auchterarder which he is enrolled in, to just 4 months. Their reasoning is he should be transitioning in the community he lives in, which is Cumbernauld.

Kieran does not cope well with change, due to his Autism and no preparation has been done to support Kieran leaving education by social work. This is why Kieran was enrolled in the 18-21 programme at Ochil Tower, he has attended the school for nearly 4 years. The staff there know him well and understand his support needs. All the professionals involved with Kieran agree that 4 months is not enough time to undertake this huge transition and have recommended he complete the 3 years.

Kieran has the funding in place to pay for his placement and he is on the housing list for Auchterarder - so this will be his local community. So there is no obvious reason why social work are putting our family at risk. The professionals have reported to social work at several meetings that if they take Kieran out of this programme after 4 months, the effects to both Kieran and his family will be catastrophic.

Due to Kieran's Autism, he can become very agitated around changes to routine and this can lead to physically challenging behaviour. Kieran's psychiatrist has made it very clear - Kieran and his family are at significant physical and emotion risk, if social work insist on removing him from this programme.

Please can you help us to prevent North Lanarkshire Council social work department, from putting our amazing son and family at risk?
