UC System Needs to Fight the Tax Plan that would make Grad Studies Too Costly to Pursue
0 have signed. Let’s get to 1,000!
The latest proposed tax plan would devastate Graduate Studies programs across the U.S. Graduate students who are working as TAs or RAs and get tuition remission as part of their compensation will now be taxed on that tuition waiver. So a grad student getting paid ~$20K a year (and working a ton of hours for it) will be taxed on their income plus the tuition waiver amount.
Lots of students would jump from a 15% federal tax bracket to a 25% bracket with no actual increase in income to pay the tax. This woukd mean that many students would not be able to afford to pursue a graduate degree. This is all in an effort to help subsidize corporate tax cuts.
As graduate students, faculty, and supporters of more affordable access to education, we are asking that the UC President and Board of Regents take a stand against this proposed injustice.
