Rachel Gutekunst started this petition to Governor Janet Mills

Having grown up in rural Maine I have suffered through extensive power outages, lack of running water and heat and the ability to cook as a result. The power system in place under the monopoly of Central Maine Power is costing the health and quality of life of Mainers every time the power goes out. The costs imposed by CMP are not only extraordinary but also costly to the seniors in the community that rely on electricity to survive. The lack of ability of CMP to restore power every time there is a storm has reached its limit. It is time to implement a different system in areas where this is a chronic issue. The rural areas of Maine, such as Oxford Hills, where I am from, needs help, not to mention lakes region and any non-metropolitan area!

My mother is on oxygen and relies on electricity to live and has been put on the emergency notification list to restore power and is still one of the last residents to receive power restoration each time. How many other seniors and non-seniors alike in rural areas suffer similarly, sitting in the dark in their homes praying the power comes back on before they run out of air because they cannot afford a generator? Why must anyone have a generator when they pay over $400 a month just for electricity?

I believe we should mandate CMP to bury all of their rural power lines so that this is no longer a problem, or find a company who will. Make them take a break from forcing the corridor through our state and put the money, jobs and the effort back into Maine. The project of making this happen would create jobs for Mainers, and give back to all our communities. Residents deserve to have the energy they are paying for without weeks of interruption from an overpriced company who gouges the Maine people at every turn endangering the lives of seniors and non-seniors alike who are electricity dependent residents. Making this change would ensure that Maine residents would be safe throughout the storms in the winter and summer, it would create less hazards for people on roads and traveling on trails, and would require less maintenance every time there is a storm. There are successful models in place.

I implore you to help make this change for Maine to help us all, to help my mother with COPD who needs oxygen to live, to help my father who is recovering from cancer and needs care, for all us who need running water to stay healthy, to help restore communication, lights, heat, and power to all Maine residents to ensure our safety and well being, and let's make sure the power stays on. I implore you to Help.
