Why this petition matters

Started by Andrew Schmidt

Governor Mills, please enact a 90 day moratorium on evictions. As your emergency orders have wisely acknowledged, the coronavirus (Covid-19) is the greatest public health threat of modern times. At the same time more people have lost their sources of income in the last month than ever before. We have been ordered to shelter in our homes, and yet landlords are still threatening to throw struggling tenants on the street. As a practical matter the courts are closed and the landlords will not be able to get an eviction order, but most tenants don’t know this and are extremely stressed out. Some are undoubtedly packing up and leaving their shelters. It is only a matter of time until some landlords, confused by the lack of direction, take matters into their own hands, attempting to forcibly and illegally eject tenants. If we are ordered to shelter in place, that shelter must be protected by law. This not only protects the families from homelessness, but protects our entire community and especially our front line healthcare workers from the spread of the virus if families are forced onto the streets or into the homes of relatives.
