Less Homework and Stress for our High School Students

Our children at the New Rochelle High School are overstressed and overtaxed. Each night, they have 4-6 hours of homework. If they are involved in a school sport or after school activity -- which is highly encouraged by college admissions officers -- they don't get home until dinner time or later. And they don't start homework until 7:30 or 8pm. They are up all hours of the night. In addition, breaks and vacations are times when students can unwind, decompress and share valuable time with family. These mini-breaks should not be interrupted by homework, which is exactly what is happening. Summer vacation should be just that. Kids should have the opportunity to learn through experiences - travel, work or camp. These experiential activities are just as important as book learning. Studies have shown over and over again that excessive homework does not reinforce learning. The school district seems to acknowledge that students are overtaxed due to the highly promoted screening of Beyond Measure. We don't need to see the movie. We are living it. Let's stop talking about it and do something.
