PLEASE PAUSE [Edmonton's Supervised Injection Sites]

At present, Edmonton has no supervised injection sites. AMSISE (Access to Medically Supervised Injection Sites Edmonton) is now proposing to open three sites at once, clustered closely together in McCauley and Central McDougall (Chinatown). AMSISE has asked Canada's Health Minister to exempt these three sites from the oversight of the Controlled Drugs and Substances Act (CDSA).
We are not against supervised injection as a harm reduction strategy, but we are deeply concerned to observe that AMSISE has failed to responsibly analyze cumulative impacts of clustering the sites within these distressed neighbourhoods, and has not engaged in meaningful consultation with business owners and residents in the surrounding community.
We, the undersigned residents of Edmonton, urgently ask the Health Minister to withhold CDSA exemptions for these three sites, pending critical investigations of the need for, and effects of, clustering sites in this distressed area.
