Canadian gov't: REQUIRE MEANINGFUL AGE VERIFICATION ON ALL PORNOGRAPHIC WEBSITES.

As parents, families, educators, children and citizens we ask the government to stop the barrage of pornographic websites that are currently freely accessible to Canadian children online. We call upon the House of Commons to adopt all of the protocols recommended by the expert witnesses in the recent study on the harms of pornography, particularly in requiring meaningful age verification on all pornographic adult websites.

We draw the attention of the House to the following points outlined in the recent report by the Standing Committee on Health:

WHEREAS an estimate 90% of boys and 60% of girls view online pornography before age 18
WHEREAS the average boy sees pornography at age 12;
WHEREAS the majority of sexually explicit material features violence toward, and the domination, degradation and humiliation of women and girls;
WHEREAS the effects of the ease of accessibility of violent and degrading sexually explicit material is a matter of public health;
WHEREAS a child’s exposure to violent sexually explicit material is a form of child abuse;
WHEREAS Article 17 of the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child requires Canada to develop the means to protect children from forms of media that are ‘injurious to his or her well-being....’;

Our citizens, especially children, should have free access to the benefits of the Internet without constant risk of dangerous (and often accidental) exposure to pornography. Pornographic sites should only be accessible through explicit opt-in protocols by verified adults.

We trust that you will do what's right in tabling measures that will protect the psychological, emotional, physical and relational health of our current and future citizens.
