Dear Jane,

Let's be honest, the world is laughing at Tampa right now. Back The Blur or Bogk the Blup or Bonk the BluF is on you. You're the leader of this city and everyone thinks you're ok with this monstrosity in the middle of downtown that is one of the most poorly executed examples of street art to be found ANYWHERE in the world. This is embarrassment to our fair city and the only way to save face at this point would be to IMMEDIATELY REMOVE THIS UNINSPIRED GARBAGE.

Additionally, it's important to note that when the "Back the Blue" march occurred in downtown Tampa earlier this summer, a common sight in the crowd of white people from Pasco County was the flashing of white supremacist hand signals at black people as some sort of sick threat. What kind of message does this hideous "Back the Blue" mural on Franklin Street send to Black people in Tampa knowing that it was painted by white supremacists? (besides, we're a racist city that can't produce decent murals?)

Contrary to misconception, Black Lives Matter is not about vilification of law enforcement. It's about justice. It's about civil rights. Being treated with respect and dignity. An acknowledgment that for 400 years, black people in America have been treated as less than equal. When the BOGK the BLUP/Blue Lives Matter Movement kicked off it was a celebration of the actions of Darren Wilson's killing of Michael Brown as justified and heroic. This narrative is the central aspect of BOGK THE BLUP. When you present people like Darren Wilson and the sick cop that killed George Floyd as heroes, their victims must be presented as villains. This is where the rhetoric surrounding BONK THE BLUF needs more scrutiny: if shooters like Darren Wilson are actually victims and heroes, and the people they shoot are true villains, then each and every time the police shoot someone in America, it is an example of police on the defense in a nationwide war on them by predominately black aggressors.

While it might make for a provoking narrative, the idea that police and not black people are the ones under attack is not backed by data. For police, the murder rate is just 4 per 100,000. Even when considering more causes of death than just murder (a police officer is more likely to be killed in a traffic accident, for example, than by gunfire), the position of police officer remains far from the most dangerous job in the United States, with fatal injury rates significantly below those of professions like logging worker, fisher, pilot, roofer, and trash collector.

Through their inversion of the truth, Blue Lives Matter is not calling for respect and peace but for fear. This is precisely what makes Bonk The BluP so dangerous. The movement is not merely a conservative ridiculously childish counterpoint to Black Lives Matter but is ammunition for the racial fears that drive police to shoot unarmed black men to begin with.

Furthermore, to reduce the issue of justice in our communities to a battle over slogans painted on the street is poor form, entirely insipid, and pretty damn insulting. In our system, "blue lives" are already considered to matter most--which is why police appropriation of the call for black lives is so disturbing.

Take this hideous statement of incompetence and white fragility off the street NOW!
