Help me in trying to change Cadillac’s current recycling program’s contract by getting the City and City Council to reevaluate its low standard of recycling! There has to be a better way to recycle in Cadillac, especially since we are FORCED to pay for it regardless of whether we recycle or not.

In 2013 when the City of Cadillac introduced a mandatory pay recycling program, they entered into a contract with the Ms. Green recycling company. At that time, the program took ALL plastics #1-7, plastic bags, paper products and metals while providing a small 18-gallon tote, and bi-weekly pickups.

As of 2018, the contract between Ms. Green and the City of Cadillac was renewed for another 4 years (until June 2020). The program is now strictly limited to plastic containers only #1 & #2, paper products and metals. While Ms. Green has agreed to accept #5 white plastic food containers, they are not required to. The cost to us is $15.28 monthly ($2.53 recycling & $12.75 trash).

There has to be a better way of recycling in Cadillac! Take the little ole town of Lake City next to us for example; they have a population of 836, a fantastic program that provides a large 96-gallon tote and takes everything recyclable. Yes, ALL plastics, glass, paper products, metals and even egg cartons. They use a fairly local company that is out of Traverse City, and have bi-weekly pickups for the cost of $18.50 monthly (includes trash pick-up).

The cost difference between Cadillac's program and Lake City's is $3.22! Why bother having a program at all if you can’t recycle much of anything? Let’s renegotiate the terms and conditions to get a better recycling program for the residents of Cadillac (population 10,445) by either accepting more materials, by making the program optional instead of mandatory, or even possibly selecting a different company that can deliver what the people want.

Please feel free to add in the comments section any problems that you have experienced and what it is you would like to see changed or added.

Thank you for your time.
