Pitt Meadows By-Election

Mayor Becker announced last weekend and at the Special Council meeting that Murray's resignation would be effective January 2nd, 2018. The Province of BC created regulations around by-elections under the Community Charter. Under this Charter, a by-election is discretionary to individual Councils IF the vacancy is after January 1st of an election year. It is mandatory if before January 1 of an election year, which in this case it is! Based on this and the spirit of democracy, why aren't we holding a by-election when it clearly states that it is mandatory. Many have questioned the cost vs value of holding one only 10 months away. Councillor Bill Dingwall has communicated that after taking into account the cost of holding one and the savings of now not paying Councillor Murray's salary as he is on unpaid leave, the cost for holding a by-election would be approximately $23,000 to the City. This equates to only (approx.) $1.25 per citizen! With so many important issues facing the city including the review of our OCP (Official Community Plan) that will shape the direction of our City over the next 10 years, it is extremely important that we have a full table to provide additional perspective and assist in these discussions.
Please support and sign this petition to send a message to Mayor Becker that the citizens of Pitt Meadows WANT a by-election and that delaying Mr. Murray's resignation until January 2nd goes against our democratic process.
