Cricket Australia and the Australian Cricketers Association to commence mediation

0 have signed. Let’s get to 100!

We call upon James Sutherland, CEO Cricket Australia, and Alistair Nicholson, CEO Australian Cricketers Association:

1. to take immediate action to commence an independent mediation process with regards to a new MOU between the two parties;

2. to agree on interim action to ensure that Australia fully honours its short-term international commitments (Australia A tour to South Africa, Australia tour to Bangladesh) while mediation is ongoing.

Background:

From July 1 2017 around two hundred female and male professional cricketers in Australia are unemployed following the expiry of their contracts with Cricket Australia (CA), and the failure of CA and the Australian Cricketers Association (ACA) to agree upon a new Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) for their ongoing employment.

Current indications from both parties are that an agreement is not imminent.

The impact if this dispute continues will be that these players will need to seek livelihoods either as professional cricketers in other countries, or to seek employment outside of the sport.

Failure to resolve this dispute will also see, in the short term, Australia's international cricket commitments overseas (Australia A tour to South Africa, Australian Test tour to Bangladesh) placed in jeopardy, and place competition in the 2017-18 Australian season, including the Ashes and the Big Bash League, in danger of either cancellation or proceeding with inexperienced non-professional players.

Such an outcome would cause significant damage to Australia's reputation in the cricket world and create significant financial risk if it led to Cricket Australia breaking agreements to play other countries if it cannot supply a competitive team. Further financial risk would be incurred in potential losses by sponsors and media partners if matches were played with substandard teams or not at all.

Potential exists for economic loss to tourism and related industries in each state capital city, and to the value of future media rights. Cricket's reputation in relation to other "grassroots" sports in Australia would be diminished.
