Expunging Criminal Records

Expunging Criminal Records
Why this petition matters
Currently in New York there is no process to have a criminal record expunged (removed, erased). Over 2.3 million people in NY have a criminal record ranging from DWI's to violent felonies. We need to have the clean slate bill (S1553B) amended and passed. Right now lawmakers have removed Sen. Zellnor Myrie's original provision of having criminal records expunged. That provision needs to be enacted so that people can have a 2nd chance at employment and housing. A person who has certain misdemeanors and all felonies suffer from obtaining employment which can cause mental and emotional strain for the individual. A person who receives a Class D or E felony which are the non violent felonies are still considered a felon which hinders them from employment and housing which needs to be corrected. A law to expunge certain felonies and misdemeanors needs to happen in 2021 because it only perpetuates barriers for people in my community and all across NY to gain and augment their chances in life. Sealing a conviction is not enough for NY. Did you know that some crimes take 7 to 10 years to be sealed? We need expungement which helps reduce crime in cities such as where I live in Newburgh, NYC, and other inner cities in NYS. Please support this to help myself and Sen. Zellnor Myrie make a difference and make history. Thank You.
