Banning girls from wearing pants and shorts to school has detrimental effects on their educations!
Girls can't participate in sports or P.E. in dresses/skirts. High school girls are not reaching recommended exercise standards and are significantly less active than boys. Plus we are always in need of more female sports players!
Girls are constantly sent home from school for skirts/dresses that are too short. Missing just one day of classes can mean falling behind. And falling behind can eventually lead to dropping out of school.
Forcing students to wear dresses/skirts sexualises girl's bodies at an extremely young age, which can lead to serious confidence and self-esteem issues later in life.
Having a separate uniform for girls and boys is an outdated method which disadvantages students. It needs to change!
James Merlino, Victorian Minister for Education- amend the Equal Opportunity Act 2010, Part 4, Division 3: Discrimination in education, Section 42: Standards of dress and behaviour. 'An educational authority may not divide standards of dress, appearance and behaviour by sex or gender.'
