Hi my name is Maree, I live in Ballarat with my son Angus who has autism ADHD and an IQ score of 86. Last year he was hospitalised with type one diabetes and spent time In icu, this has led to PTSD and brought on severe OCD and Tourette’s syndrome. Sufficed to say Gus isn’t coping well in any aspect of his life.. the school is working to apply for funding for an aide but say they can’t have him there anymore then less then 2hours a day 9-10.40.
I’ve been told that Gus isn’t eligible to attend specialist school due to his IQ score and had a very frank conversation with the inclusion coordinator at the school about weather or not mainstream school is going to offer Gus the level of support he desperately needs.
I feel there’s a gap in the system that needs addressing, there’s so many children and families that would benefit from a school for children with autism and special needs so they can cope and get through a school day.
While my son has started taking medication and sees a behavioural psychologist to help him through this horrible time for him, he is getting less motivated more and more everyday. My husband and I have fought tirelessly for Gus since he was born to get him the help he needs and now I feel we’ve been let down by this education system. Where does my son fit into society? He doesn’t respond well to homeschooling as we found out last year as he thrives on the rigorous routine that school provides him. He’s a great kid in the right environment. If only the world was set up for people like Gus, we would see kids like him thrive instead of fall through cracks in the system of which you can imagine is heartbreaking for his parents to witness.

Ive naively created this petition to bring attention to this need in Ballarat, to give other families a little hope that they’re not alone and maybe one day value people with autism’s education.
