I stand with the students who prepared this petition, and I am proud of them. As an alum, I am unfortunately aware of the lack of diversity within Forbes, and I regret not making more noise about it when I was a student. I'm sorry that these students have had to create a petition just to have POC voices heard and seen within STAD. I am sorry that students have to be the ones educating their educators. Diversity matters.

I’m signing because you can’t berate and emotionally manipulate your students into silence and call it “how they do it in the real world”

We as a JMU community need to do better by our BIPOC students: past, current, and future. Educators are so important, and must be as active as their students in creating a safe space that is heavily invested in anti-racism.

As a JMU alum, I'm aware that we are not doing enough to promote equality and racial justice. We need to change.

I stand with those who prepared this petition and I stand with the Black community. The School of Visual and Performing Arts at JMU needs to do much, much better. Let’s start here.

Jmu is my 2nd home but there was very little diversity in undergrad (2009-2013). I was a minor and therefore not good/serious enough to be cast in the productions. As a semi-outsider I could see there should have been and definitely sounds like it needs more diversity in those accepted, diversity in staff, diversity in workshops, diversity in the shows they produce, the list goes on. Forbes was a safe place for many of us. When that place becomes a remembrance of pain, we learn and evolve.
