During the 2015 election more stories emanated from right-wing newspapers and there were moments when front-page splashes dominated television news coverage. Editors who relied on newspapers to help shape the political agenda failed to make impartial judgements about news selection (see Cushion, S. et al. 2016. Newspapers, impartiality and television news: intermedia agenda-setting during the 2015 uk general election campaign. Journalism Studies).
Impartiality lies at the heart of public service and is the core of the BBC's commitment to its audiences. This commitment was not met in 2015. The BBC needs to demonstrate that lessons have been learned in its coverage of the 2017 election.
