Ann Colyer started this petition to James Estep and

Students, parents, and staff of Mifflin County School District, we need your help! On January 11th, 2021, the entire district is set to open back up for in-person instruction. We as a community should not allow this to happen. The Covid-19 cases in our area are still very high and will only go up as many people just celebrated holidays.

Going back will risk the health of students, staff, and anyone else in contact with the district, and for what? I understand that the people involved in making this decision were worried about low attendance and high amounts of incomplete assignments, but in times like this, grades should not be the highest priority. Our (students) mental health is deteriorating. We're scared, sad, isolated. These negative emotions double in size when we're in school.

In addition to risking our physical health and damaging our mental health, James Estep admitted in his parent letter that this will not work. The following are quotes directly from the previously mentioned letter:

  • "Although we are returning, we as a community are still very much in a period of significant viral spread"
  • "you need to be prepared for the real possibility that rising case counts within our schools or among our staff or bus drivers could lead to frequent temporary building closures of one or more buildings at a time, and there is still a strong possibility of temporary district-wide closures throughout the remainder of the school year."
  • "It has been a long, painful road for all of us, and the road ahead will continue to be rocky for a while"

These are clear arguments against the opening, and that's just from the person who wants to open the most. You could get even more arguments against it from other people. We must stay online until it is safe to go back.
