Prevent Education cuts to our children's future

Children's primary schools across Belfast and Northern Ireland are being forced to cut provisions to children in an attempt to meet their budgets.

The indicative budget suggests that there will be further cuts to our children's education, moreover it is disgraceful that the Secretary of State has announced a further reduction of 2.5% to these already inadequate indicative budgets.

Many of the schools affected are in low socio-economic areas where children are already faced with disadvantage. The impact that poor education has on not only the individual but also the community is enormous. Research and multiple reports such as Joseph Rowntree Foundations show that educational attainment is a key determining factor in how the child will progress into adulthood.

Individuals from lower educational background suffer more physical and mental health issues such as diabetes, depression and anxiety. By reducing the education budget you are sentencing our young people and our communities to live in a cycle of deprivation.

I strongly urge the government to address the shortfalls in children's education and make adequate provision for their future by liaising with Principals and Headmasters to ascertain need. How can we create the best workers and the best economy if we do not invest in our children?
