City planners have approved the proposal to remove 60 more trees from Azalea Park, even though many citizens have voiced their opposition to this proposal. Several trees were removed in 2016 leaving an unsightly scar where their grandeur once stood. Not only has the removal of these trees ruined the aesthetics of the park, it has also taken away the shade that the trees once provided for the patrons of Kid Town, the play structure designed for the children of our community. Imagine what the removal of 60 more trees will look like. The mayor of Brookings claims that the trees are being removed to aid the rejuvenation of the azaleas growing in the park; however, the trees that were removed previously were nowhere near the patches of azaleas that can be found throughout. Many citizens are speculating that the removal of the trees has nothing to do with the azaleas at all; rather, we believe it is to benefit the agenda of the parks and recreation department. Furthermore, we don't believe the public was given adequate notice for the decision making. Posting the agenda online is not satisfactory. We are asking for the chance to be heard by our elected officials. Please help us in voicing our concerns by signing this petition. Together we can make a difference!
