Schools are in Crisis over lack of Funding.

Dear Jacob and Wera,

We are a group of parents and education staff who are writing to implore you to improve the funding to our schools. We have met with you, we have visited your surgeries and you have stood with us in meetings and even demonstrations. It's simply not good enough to use kind and supportive phrases any longer. The situation continues to deteriorate and the debate overshadowed by Brexit. Please act on our behalf to improve the quality of funding before a generation of children suffer further cuts in our classrooms.

We must act now to improve the quality of education for our children. We must provide the necessary resources for our teaching and support staff to be properly paid, we must provide the money for teaching resources that enable our children to make progress not have to send begging letters to parents to 'top-up' our funds!

  • Spending has gone down in real terms - Spending per child has gone down by 8% between 2009/10 and 2017/18 in England
  • Costs for have gone up - Costs are rising with inflation (e.g., National Insurance, salaries, energy bills, pensions and academy costs) while budgets stay at the same level
  • Support for Special Educational Needs is inadequate - 30% of children with Special Educational Needs are NOT receiving any support. This is described as a ‘national scandal’ by Ofstedii
  • Pastoral care is disappearing

Following drastic cuts in council budgets, children’s services, including mental health services, have also been cut to the bone

Many head teachers have been reluctant to speak directly about the cuts (they can’t be seen to be political and it’s difficult to highlight challenges when their future depends on attracting new pupils) so we must act on their behalf and support our schools and children.

Wera and Jacob, please support our schools in Bath and North East Somerset today.
