Close West Edmonton Mall During COVID-19 Pandemic

West Edmonton Mall (WEM) is the largest shopping mall in North America which attracts 90,000 to 200,000 shoppers daily (depending on the season) and employs more than 24,000 people. The mall contains much more than just retail stores, but an indoor waterpark, an amusement park, arcades, two food courts, a sea lion exhibit, and its own restaurant district. As COVID-19 has caused events of over 250 people to be cancelled, WEM has continued to stay open, even holding events in their large hockey rink for customers and vendors to browse. The only preventative measures taken? Hand sanitizers placed at mall entrances for customers and mall employees to use. No extra cleaning staff has been seen, there has been no increase in sanitizing efforts, no one seen cleaning elevator railings, door knobs, surfaces or other frequently touched surfaces throughout the day.

Mall employees and businesses in the mall do not have a choice in regards to their shop staying open during this Pandemic, in fact businesses must PAY West Edmonton Mall, should their shop be closed during mall hours. This is putting employees and consumers at risk, due to the high volumes of traffic in and out of the mall. No comment or communication has come from WEM in regards to how they will be moving forward during this Pandemic, leaving employees with no clear idea how their health will be prioritized during this time.

As Social Distancing and Isolation are becoming realities for many of us, an increased flexibility from property owners and business owners is expected, but WEM has let not only its employees down, but has continued to put their customers at risk. Please consider signing this petition to urge WEM to improve their precautionary measures during this time, and allow businesses inside the opportunity to close voluntarily without repercussion.
