Decriminalize Marijuana in Duval County Florida
0 have signed. Let’s get to 1,000!
The City of Jacksonville has spent nearly $100,000.00 in 2017 alone arresting citizens for marijuana.
We should urge our city to adopt the same ordinances that so many other large municipalities and counties in Florida have done already.
City councils that have voted to adopt issuing civil fines and decriminalize the act of possessing less than 20 grams of marijuana:
Miami-Dade (June 2015), Miami Beach (July 2015), Hallandale Beach and Key West (August 2015),West Palm Beach (September 2015), Broward County and Walton Manors (November 2015), Palm Beach County (December 2015), Tampa(March 2016) , Orlando(May 2016), Osceola County(June 2016), Alachua County(August 2016), Port Ritchie(September 2016)
Never in modern history has there existed greater public support for ending the nation's nearly century-long experiment with marijuana prohibition. The continued criminalization of adult marijuana use is out-of-step with the views of adults throughout America, 89% of whom endorse medical marijuana and 60% of whom now endorse the outright legalization of recreational cannabis.
In the Florida election of 2016, Amendment 2 was widely supported statewide with 71.3% approval, however Duval County had even greater support at 74.5% approval (politico.com).
I just ask that you help utilize your presence and audience and help save the hard-working tax payers of this fine city hundreds of thousands of dollars a year in unnecessary expenses. As one of the major cities of this great state, why is it that we should fall behind our counter parts in recognizing this? Ask our City to move to decriminalize as have so many other areas in Florida have.
Free up our officers time to address more serious items facing the city (500+ arrests this year alone for marijuana; that is 1,000’s of man hours not spend on patrolling).
There have been more arrests this year in Jacksonville alone for marijuana possession than many other violent crimes combined!
Keep our judicial system cleared of small frivolous cases.
