Protect the Merri Creek Parkland

VicTrack is seeking $1.5M from the Darebin City Council for a transfer of ownership of the parkland between the Merri Creek and Merri Parade. The implication is that if Council cannot purchase the land, then it may be sold privately.
This land has been maintained by the City of Darebin and its precursor, the City of Northcote, for decades: mowing, weeding and maintaining the busy bike path. The Friends of the Merri Creek have maintained the native vegetation and secured funding for the rehabilitation of indigenous ecology on this land. The Merri Creek Management Committee has responsibly and effectively governed the land as a component of the Creek's corridor and catchment. Many of us have organised and/or participated in removing rubbish from this land as a part of Clean Up Australia Day. It’s classified as an area of significance for its importance to our local Indigenous people, its environmental values and its high amenity for residents from all over the Cities of Darebin, Yarra and Moreland.
That VicTrack is seeking the sale of this land, long cared for by Council and residents, from ratepayers' funds better allocated to providing services and amenity to the citizens of Darebin, is inappropriate and unjust. It was never purchased by VicTrack or its precursors, having been reserved by the Colony of Victoria in the 19th century for a branch of the fledgling suburban rail network that never eventuated.
We support Darebin Council on their resolution of 5 October, 2015 to request that VicTrack have this sensitive parcel of land reclassified as Crown Land, with the City of Darebin to be subsequently appointed as its Committee of Management, which formally reflects the long-standing arrangement on site.
