Marcos Ramirez started this petition to Governor J.B. Pritzker and

"Hey Everybody!

My name is Marcos Ramirez. I'm currently writing you this message and cry for help from a Maximum Security Prison Cell here at Stateville Correctional Center in Joliet, Illinois. Today marks "day 5" of my two week quarantine isolation stay in F house cell #214, due to testing positive for Coronavirus last Thursday July 2nd 2020. I've been a frontline worker and hospice volunteer at the health care unit here during this whole Covid-19 pandemic, helping medical and security staff to care for terminally ill patients and other residents who've tested positive for coronavirus, or who were under suicide watch, or a hunger strike. Even though my co-workers and I always kept out full PPE on everyday while cleaning and sanitizing patients cells and other surfaces inside the buildings, offices, restrooms, break rooms, bullpens, nursing stations, urgent care, etc. I (and two of my co-workers) still managed to somehow test positive for the virus while our three co-workers did not.

Living here at Stateville since September 2015 has been very challenging to my personal health due to poor living conditions where there’s no air circulation/ no ventilation system; years worth of dirt, dust, bird crap, caked up on all the windows, cat walks, and stairs from lack of power washing; all which has contributed to me developing upper respiratory breathing complications, coughing all the time because the air is dry and hot and waking up in the middle of the night gasping for air and choking from having fluid in my lungs. Ive developed high blood pressure and post- traumatic stress disorder over the years in prison, and I have a pre-existing heart condition called Left Ventricular Hypertrophy (LCH), which is an enlarged heart that causes palpitations and pain in my chest from too much blood being pumped into one of the chambers of my heart.

At age 42, with my current health conditions I'm now particularly susceptible to illness and more vulnerable to dying in prison from Coronavirus related complications. Many of us here have gotten sick from the virus, from early back as November/December 2019 and January/February 2020, when a lot of people are me (including myself) were vomiting violently and uncontrollably for three days with diarrhea, and many others were complaining of losing their sense of smell, taste getting fever, and coughing including my cellmate who recently tested negative. I believe I may also have gotten infected with the virus back in the first week of March when I got an extremely high fever at work and came back to the cell; mild headaches, dizziness, coughing, and sneezing ensued. One night (about a week later), I had a very sharp stabbing pain in my heart where I seriously thought I was going to pass out and die because it kept happening every time I tried to fall back asleep again. I've never been more scared in my life before that night in cell #C1058! To date "16" residents succumbed to the virus here at Stateville; Over 200 residents have tested positive, and over 70 correctional officers and other IDOC staff members got infected, were isolated at home, and have returned to work. Stateville is finally beginning to expand testing of all residents workers and general population were more positive test results for Covid-19 are now emerging as I write you. Im seeing new residents coming into F- house with positive test results like every other day.

For those of you out there who know me, and for those who don't, I really need your help! I'm currently filing an Emergency Clemency Petition for Governor Pritzker and the Prisoner Review Board in Illinois to consider me for a sentence commutation, from life without parole to 20 years. Time considered Served. Even my Judge (James B. Linn) who reluctantly imposed the (LWOP) sentence, due to mandatory statue in Illinois, said he'd give me a outdate if he had it in power of his hands to do it, because he saw I was not a criminal, and could not ignore all the mitigating qualities about my character. Please sign my petition stating why you're supporting me in my clemency petition to request a sentence commutation from the governor. If you would also like to write a support/character letter for me please address it to: Honorable JB Pritzker, Office of the Governor, 207 State House, Springfield, IL 62706. After you complete your letter, please send it to my attorney Karen Ranos, PO Box 360, Lansing, IL 60438. Email: Karen@ranos-law.com. Phone# 708-541-4806. We will provide you with recommendations for support/character to help you if needed.

As I now sit here isolated in this mandatory quarantine, infected with a deadly virus that's claimed the lives of well over half a million people worldwide, I am afraid for my own life, and I don't want to die in prison! I have too much to live for: My sons, my family, friends, and community; and my life is valuable because I have so much to offer to contribute, and to give back to society. Please help me regain my freedom, and please stay safe, healthy and be extra careful in protecting yourselves out there from getting infected! Thank you for your time and God Bless!!"
