Weighted GPA for Honors Classes - IUSD based; Irvine Unified School District
Why this petition matters
We see students stressing over sleepless nights, studying to the depths of their textbooks, fulfilling their expectations of an Honors student. But for what? Why are they doing all this work, when they don't receive any benefit?
IUSD creates the most wonderful experience for students of all ages, yet one concern that bothers many is why honors classes are not weighted in high school. Most schools across the country provide an advantage of a 4.5 weighted GPA(from a 4.0 system) for honors classes to allow students to be motivated in these accelerated classes. Today, IUSD counts these enhanced classes just as if a student had taken a regular course. Students begin to stress to maintain high grades knowing that they have more pressure than the rest. Why is it that we are giving students more work that counts equivalent to those with less. Other districts include a weighted GPA for honors classes that allow students to receive higher point-averages and be accepted into a variety of universities, yet our schools cause students to gain more stressors and anxiety with the same workload. Why are other schools giving their students a higher opportunity to be placed inter dream universities, yet we are not. We must act as one and make a difference. Teachers and fellow students of the Irvine Unified School District, I urge you to sign this petition to open the eyes of the district's board, and to let students continue rising.
As former President Barack Obama had stated, "Change will not come if we wait for some other person or if we wait for some other time. We are the ones we've been waiting for. We are the change that we seek." Let's make a difference together and benefit the lives of our students by creating a change.
IUSD is one of the top districts in California, let's make it number one together. Please share this with the Irvine community to make change in your high school experience.
