Like many of us, I have many family members and close friends who would be devastated if they were infected with COVID. Every day I worry about my asthmatic mother, a physician scientist who manages many clinical trials on treatments for COVID-19, and my grandfather, who has quarantined himself in a rural mountainous area for safety. My mentor, in fact, is currently in a life or death struggle with the virus. To protect ourselves, those we care about, and society as a whole, we must protect our children.

Just like the rest of us, I have heard the many warnings from experts on the news. I have also been fortunate enough to meet an epidemiologist as part of my virtual extracurricular work. What these professionals have said, time and time again, is that educational institutions, if their reopening is improperly handled, could be the site of hundreds of thousands of new infections in the fall. Schools will reopen in the fall whether or not we supported this decision, so we must do our part to minimize in-school transmission of Coronavirus to protect students, parents, and grandparents. creating a healthy and safe learning environment.
