Don't stand for cleft and facial disfigurement discrimination by ITV (benidorm 3rd May'17)

The final episode of series nine of Benidorm aired on ITV on Wednesday 3rd May 2017. I, like many others, was disgusted to hear the remark "a face like a dropped pie" used to describe the actor Danny Tetley who was born with cleft.

Around one in every 700 births has a cleft lip/ palate. Many thousands of children and adults in the UK live with the lifelong effects of a cleft lip and palate. For the parents and families of children born with the condition, years are spent in and out of hospital for numerous operations. Every one of them has scars and marks that affect the appearance of their face for their entire life. For anyone to have to see someone who has come through surgery described in such a disgusting way on primetime television is shockingly offensive.

CLAPA (the cleft lip and palate association) start their awareness week this Saturday... I would love for people who do not know anything about cleft lip and palate to use this week to research a little into the causes and problems facing people born with cleft and also to collect signatures from those of you who agree that itv should not have allowed this to happen to forward onto ofcom to be dealt with. I genuinely believe this could cause psychological harm to someone with cleft or other facial disfigurement.  I feel strongly that it is important to show itv where they have failed,  to prevent something like this happening again.

Please sign and share.

Thankyou in advance
