Why this petition matters

JOIN BIWOC LEADERS AND ALLIES BY SIGNING THIS OPEN LETTER SUPPORTING AND THANKING PRESIDENT BIDEN AND VICE PRESIDENT HARRIS FOR KEEPING THEIR WORD TO SUPPORT AND APPOINT A BLACK WOMAN TO SERVE ON THE HIGHEST COURT IN THE LAND, THE US SUPREME COURT.

February 2, 2022

President Biden

Vice President Harris

The White House

Washington, D.C.

Dear President Biden and Vice President Harris,

Since the Judiciary Act of 1789, there has not been a Black woman to serve on the US Supreme Court. For 233 years the voices of Black women have been ignored. Due to President Biden's promise to nominate the first Black woman to the supreme court, that will no longer be the case.

"EQUAL JUSTICE UNDER THE LAW"-These very words, are written above the main entrance to the Supreme Court Building and express the ultimate responsibility of the Supreme Court of the United States. The Court is the highest tribunal in the Nation for all cases and controversies arising under the Constitution or the laws of the United States. How can the court ensure the American people the promise of equal justice under the law when the court does not reflect its people?

As Biden prepares to nominate the first Black woman to the nation's highest court, we have had the opportunity to witness many firsts. The first Black President and the first Black woman Vice President. Although those firsts were very impactful, witnessing the first Black woman to sit on the United States Supreme Court will be the most symbolic.

The significance of having a Black woman on the Supreme Court is clear. It is a clear message and acknowledgment of what we already know. Black women are beyond qualified to do everything their peers can do (and then some). We sign this petition to stand with the nominee and show support for what will be a very trying nomination process.

Women, especially Black women, are disproportionately affected by decisions made by the courts. It is time to have a voice who can speak to and understand the experiences of the women in BIPOC communities.

Whoever she is, we have her back.

Sincerely,

Rachel C. Green, President & CEO of Women of Color Coalition
