Retraction of ISSMA State Show Choir and Jazz Finals Cancellations

Despite a mere 10 confirmed cases of COVID-19 in Indiana (all of which confirmed to be firmly under control and in isolation), the Indiana State School Music Association (ISSMA) cancelled all of its events through April 11, 2020, with the sole reason for the cancellation being a fear of the virus. Though the concern is commendable, the action itself is entirely rash and unfounded, seeing as, compared to other pandemics in recent decades, COVID-19 has a far lower rate of infection and mortality. Focusing one's view on the current situation shows that COVID-19 also has a lower infection and mortality rate than this year's, or most years', flu strains, which are all easily managed. Despite these obvious points of data which are far more reliable than mainstream media's fearmongering through dramatisation, the ISSMA has chosen to make a rash, paranoid, and lazy decision with their organization.

Though one month sounds insignificant in the grand scheme of things, this one month contains two key events, the Show Choir and Jazz Band State Finals. In other words, the culmination of nearly a year's worth of hard work and dedication from thousands of students, parents, and directors, and many many tens of thousands of dollars invested into these show choir sets and jazz band performances. To be frank, having all of this preparation and money, along with 4 years of anticipation for us seniors, thrown into the drain by a small group of bureaucratic adults who are paranoid about one of the most over-dramatised and overblown "pandemics" of all time is not only extremely disappointing and heartbreaking for us students, parents, and teachers, but also disheartening. The cancellation of the ISSMA State Finals, with no effort put forth by the association to reschedule, is a firm indicator of not only the incompetency, short-sightedness, and laziness of the ISSMA, but also the paranoia that has been leading this entire world on a wholly unnecessary downward slope; in economics, in politics, in information gathering, and, as evidenced here, in decision making. Please sign this petition not only to restore the hopes and dreams of Indiana's proud singers and jazz musicians, but to validate their work, and discourage the worldwide paranoia that threatens to undermine it.
