Do you hate sitting in traffic or driving your kids to school?
Many of our kids in the Issaquah School District are not taking buses because they are overcrowded, unsafe and take far too long to get students to school. Parents are causing increased traffic all over Sammamish, Issaquah and Bellevue by driving their kids to school. With so much construction and rapid development happening in our communities causing a huge yearly increase in student and resident populations, we need ways to decrease traffic by getting parents off the road and more kids on to buses. Traffic has become the number one concern in our cities and the school district needs to help find ways to mitigate this issue, not make it worse.
Many of the bus routes have been combined between middle and high schools. In some cases where the schools are near each other (i.e. Maywood/Liberty) this works well, but not for many others (i.e. Pine Lake Middle School/Skyline) where the schools are far apart in heavy traffic areas. This can result in bus trip times of over an hour each way to go to a school a little over a mile away. This results in parents driving their kids to school which slows down traffic for all residents as well as staff and teachers who work at our schools.
From a safety perspective, some buses are so overcrowded that they are sitting three to a seat, when the maximum allowed is two high schoolers per seat. Many middle schoolers now are the same size or bigger than most adults and sitting three to a seat is uncomfortable and unsafe, especially in the case of an accident.
The Issaquah School District needs to provide enough buses or arrange appropriate routes for middle and high school that don't result in such long bus rides or overcrowded buses where they have to sit in an unsafe manner.
Our kids deserve to have safe buses and all residents deserve less traffic caused by parents driving kids to school.
