Israeli Interior Ministry: Recognize the Abayudaya as a Jewish Community

The Abayudaya Jewish Community in Uganda began practicing Judaism about 100 years ago, and recently officially converted to Judaism through the Conservative movement. The Jewish Agency considers them to be a recognized Jewish community, but the Israeli Interior Ministry has the final say on such matters. In June 2018, the Israeli Interior Ministry ruled not to recognize the Abayudaya as a Jewish community, thus preventing them from making Aliyah under the Law of Return. This is a slap in the face to the Abayudaya who have faithfully practiced Judaism for nearly 100 years and have undergone a formal conversion process through the Conservative movement. This is also an affront to the Conservative movement and to the Jewish Agency, both of whom recognize the Abayudaya as a Jewish community.
