I’m asking you to give serious attention to changing the name of Redmen Street. This name is a highly offensive slur, and municipalities all over the country are changing names that reflect the racism of the times when those place names were chosen. I sincerely hope the school district will also move into the 21st century and change the name of their sports teams, but at least with this street name the town can take the lead.

Here is some information that may be helpful to you: McGill University stopped using the name Redmen for their sports teams. As Suzanne Fortier, the vice-chancellor of McGill stated, "Today, 'Redmen' is widely acknowledged as an offensive term for indigenous peoples, as evidenced by major English dictionaries.”

A Utah school district made the same decision and gave this reason:

“We know that much of the world would consider the term ‘Redmen’ a racial slur and derogatory, even though local citizens do not intend it that way,” Allen said.

It would be fitting if Islip could choose the name of a Native American leader as a replacement, but if that’s not feasible, how about something like “Unity Drive”?
