To increase the accountability and transparency of Islington Council and Councillors

Islington Borough Council meets in full, public session just four times a year. On three of those occasions Councillors with executive responsibility take questions from members of the public for half an hour at the start of their proceedings. This provides an important opportunity for residents to come to the Council Chamber, raise grievances, seek clarification and hold elected members to account.

However, the Constitution of the Council expressly denies this opportunity on the fourth occasion, the Budget Council when the majority party bring forward their proposals for the public finances in the year ahead. Arguably the most important evening in the civic calendar it is regrettable that an historic anomaly prevents members of the public playing their part.

This petition calls on Islington Council to amend its constitution to allow for public questions at the annual Budget Council Meeting and to ensure that residents are encouraged and supported at all its meetings to hold elected members to account.
