Save the Mayton Street Planters!

Islington Council is threatening to remove the Mayton Street Planters, a green oasis of plants, herbs & wild flowers occupying a single parking space.  Please help to save them by signing our petition.

Installed over a year ago, by a handful of Nags Head residents, the planters have become a focal point of this residential street. Most people living in the area love and support them, children enjoy the ladybirds and bees they attract, passersby express gratitude for this natural space.

Islington Council has the least green space of any London borough (12%), and it is gradually reducing. Yet priority is given to cars and the parking of cars, when car ownership is less than 30%.

In a climate and ecological emergency, when air pollution is already at dangerous levels, Covid 19 is an urgent reminder of how much we need green space, clean air, safe streets and the wellbeing we get from nature.

The Council, after threatening to remove the planters last year, granted a parking pay suspension until July 2020. As this has now expired, they are once again saying they must go.

Residents have already provided the Council with a solution - the Residential Green Growing permit, replicating the residential car parking permit and giving residents across the borough a chance to apply for a planter in their street or estate. If you think this is a good idea please also write Rowena.Champion@islington.gov.uk and karen.agbabiaka@islington.gov.uk expressing your interest.

In the meantime please support, sign and share our petition to preserve the Mayton street planters. By removing the planters, the Council would also be removing a haven for wildlife and insects, our only natural and beautiful meeting point, and the air filtration that plants provide, in a residential street suffering from illegal levels of air pollution as a result of rat running traffic.

Thank you!
