Michael Ahern started this petition to Minister for Children Katherine Zappone and

We are Irish parents and have three children - two girls aged 11 & 13 and a boy aged 15 - we wish for them and all children to be protected from inappropriate internet content and contact.

Children Under 18 have almost unrestricted access to inappropriate internet content - particularly pornography and videos depicting the torture / killing of children, adults and animals. Age controls can be bypassed by simply lying about age, meaning that children can easily fall into contact with predators, including paedophiles and those who blackmail using sexual and embarrassing images that children have been coerced into sharing. The worst case consequences for children (including those depicted in some of this content) have been horrific and damaging for life for them and/or their families, and sometimes have caused children to commit suicide.

We want no child to be able to access inappropriate internet content or to become the victims of predators and paedophiles. Therefore everyone who can have contact with other adults must verify that they are an adult when accessing adult only websites/content, or where interaction with children is possible, so as to confirm they are not a child. Interesting statistics and research from Ireland include: 92% of 13 year olds own a smart phone, popular online games and social media and messaging apps present opportunities for adults to groom children, 41% of 8 and 9 year old boys are playing over 18 games (rated due to their violence / content) and 22% of 8 and 9 year olds are talking to someone they don't know (cybersafeireland.org).

We don't know any adult who is not concerned about the risks from the internet for children. Almost all parents feel helpless. Please sign this petition. Your support is very much appreciated. We hope that in the future parents will feel secure in the knowledge that children are protected from harmful internet content, and that children can live their young lives with more innocence than is the case today. This situation can only be resolved by the action of government(s). Technological problems can have technological solutions.

Please support this campaign in Ireland. If it succeeds in Ireland it will hopefully be imitated in other countries.
