February is Heart Health awareness month. February 7-14th is CHD awareness week. Did you know that 1 in 100 babies will be born with a congenital heart defect? In fact, a baby with CHD is born every 15 minutes! Congenital heart defects happen during the first 4 weeks of pregnancy when the baby’s heart is developing. Due to modern imaging techniques, about 1/3 of defects are diagnosed in utero; another 1/3 are diagnosed at birth. Sadly, 1/3 are not found until the infant falls ill or suddenly dies. Congenital heart defects kill more children every year than all other birth defects and illnesses combined. More than half of all babies born with CHD will require life-saving surgery within the first days or weeks of life. At this point, their hearts are the size of walnuts and their arteries are the size of angel hair pasta. Many endure long hospitalizations, multiple surgeries, and complex medical regimens throughout their lives. Despite being one of the most frequent and devastating diagnoses, CHD is one of the least discussed, shared and known about birth defects. Experts believe this is because it is an unseen illness-most babies and children appear normal and healthy and few people are aware of the great suffering they and their families endure. Sadly, congenital heart disease is also one of the least funded and researched medical conditions. Little is known about the causes, there is no preventative care, and there is no known cure. The only hope comes from monitoring, medications, medical procedures and complex surgeries and unfortunately health insurance policies do not cover this. I have been trying from last 2 years to find an insurance which meets this criteria but without any luck. Please sign this petition to secure the health and future of these kids.
