On June 5th, 42 year old Saeed Malekpour's marked his 9th birthday behind bars in Iran's notorious Evin Prison. Saeed shouldn’t be there. He should be at home in Canada, taking walks in the country, enjoying meals with friends, working as a web programmer, or creating new pieces of art.
But in October 2008, while visiting his dying father in Iran, Saeed was arrested on the grounds that an open source web program he created for uploading photos to the internet had been misused. While in detention, Saeed says he was blindfolded and handcuffed while several individuals beat him with cables, batons and their fists to force a confession. His televised "confession" was the only "evidence" used against him in court. In 2010, Saeed was sentenced to death, a sentence that was commuted to life imprisonment in 2012. He was then sentenced to another 7 years for speaking out about the torture he experienced.
Saeed’s sister Maryam has campaigned relentlessly for his release, and against the fabricated and unsubstantiated charges brought against her brother. As a result she was forced to flee Iran for Canada where she continues to advocate on his behalf: "All I want is for my brother to be free, and returned to his home in Canada, and I want an investigation that will reveal the truth."
Saeed has done nothing wrong. He should not have spent one day in prison, let alone a lifetime. Join Maryam and former prisoners Mohamed Fahmy, Homa Hoodfar, Hamid Ghassemi-Shall and Mostafa Azizi and demand the Iranian authorities release Saeed Malekpour from prison now!
