Victim; Let the Person Decide

What do you think of when you hear the word "victim"? Do you picture someone injured, either mentally or physically? Do you think of someone who was wronged somehow? That's what most people think of, and when you look up the word in the dictionary, it comes up with "a person who was harmed, injured, or killed as a result of a crime, accident, or other event or action." So why do we give people the title of victim when they haven't been harmed?

I have been in this situation, and I know of a few people that have. My name is Tracy, and my fiancee and I have been in a relationship for over three and a half years. When we first got together, I was 15 and he was 20. As our relationship grew, we decided, together, to begin sexual relations. Later on, a case was created, and he was charged with a sex crime.

With me being "under the age of consent" at the time, my parents were very involved with the process, and repeatedly mentioned that they didn't want charges to be pressed. He was the defendant, and even though my name was not stated on any of the paper work and the case was against the state, I was involuntarily given the title of "victim."

As a minor, my voice was small and often unheard, but regardless, I still attempted to fight against his charges with my parents. Nothing worked because it was all up to the county attorney and the state. I still walk around with the title on my head, and because of it, my finacee' and I are unable to have contact. The state has held this against us since the case started.

In our situation, we still want to be together, and we just want to have and build a future together. He has never hurt me.

It should be my choice (the "victim's") to have this title on their head. If they do not want it, there should be paperwork or something that can take the title away. My goal in this petition is exactly that; let's give the "victim" say in whether or not they want the title. It not only affects their life, but it also affects their families, friends, and the defendant. This will also help loved ones have contact with their partners or family members when on probation, parole, or incarcerated.

If nothing changes, we will continue to have "victim's" what are wrongful titled as such. There is no reason someone should have that on their head if they do not want it.
