What if your child was murdered for coming out as LGBTQ+ or "flirting" and the murderer was acquitted? It's possible with the gay and trans panic tactic. With this, someone can get away with murder by arguing that a victim's gender or sexual orientation provoked, caused insanity for, or would have caused the victim to harm the murderer. The American Psychological Association has debunked "gay/trans panic disorder" and removed it from their list of mental illnesses, but it is still used by murderers' legal teams to acquit the murderer. It has not yet been banned in the state of Iowa, but a bill was introduced to the Iowa legislature in 2020 before the COVID-19 pandemic put legal proceedings on hold. Our next step is to promote this bill until we can make it illegal to use this tactic in Iowa, and eventually other states.
