Camden Hale started this petition to Iowa State House and

If you live in a family of four, and your family income is $47,248 or lower, you are considered a low income family. The median household income is $46,028. These children who live in low income families can’t always afford basic things such as notebooks, textbooks, computers, internet access, etc. making it difficult to properly get their homework done. 36% of students in Iowa live in low income families. A poll conducted by the Hispanic Heritage Foundatin found that 96.5% of students across the United States needed internet access to complete homework and assignments for their classes. Nearly half of those students said they couldn’t complete these assignments because they didn’t have the proper access outside of school, sometimes resulting in lower grades.

Moreover, if we throw things in like after school activities, the possibility of a student having to act as a parent to younger siblings because of a bad home environment, jobs, etc. things really start adding up.

East Middle School was the Middle School I attended in Sioux City, Iowa. We have a school motto, “E - Excel in treating others the way you want to be treated. M - Make a positive difference. S - Stand up and put others first, because at East Middle... we achieve excellence and we’re a place to call home!” Everyone and anyone who signs this petition is doing exactly what our school motto told us to do. This petition isn’t about wanting less homework, it’s not because we’re lazy, it’s because we see firsthand how something that seems so small can really make such a negative impact on a growing persons life.

So we call on the Iowa State Legislative to bring changes to how we do homework. We call on our elected officials to find ways on eliminating the need of internet access for homework. But most importantly, we call on our elected officials on finding a way to do what they were elected to do, help their community. Thank you.
