Iowa Food Banks Plead To State Legislators “Sales Tax Repeal = $1 Million More Meals"

The Iowa Food Bank Association is requesting sales tax exemption for Iowa Food Banks, as the state’s 2020 legislative sessions begin. Iowa Food Banks are responsible for distributing 33 million meals across northeast Iowa in the last year alone. An additional $250,000 in savings and over 1 million more meals possible to distribute would begin impacting our communities immediately, if bi-partisan support for this rule passes both Iowa chambers.

Four of Iowa’s 6 Food Banks, including The Northeast Iowa Food Bank, Riverbend Food Bank, Food Bank of the Siouxland Inc, and The Food Bank of Iowa, are asking Iowans to contact their state representatives to voice their support, and call upon their elected officials to vote in favor of sales tax exemption for Food Banks.

Currently, the food bank sales tax forces Iowa's four taxable Food Banks to utilize funds donated by individuals and community supporters to pay for sales taxes that we could otherwise use to further our work to fight hunger in Iowa.

If you consider yourself a supporter of Food Banks, we implore you to sign this petition you to join us as we seek sales tax exemption for Iowa food banks to help increase the ability for the Food Bank network across Iowa to save an estimate $250,000 annually, that can instead be used to feed our children, seniors, and neighbors in need. Your integral voice and support can help make a powerful impact.

In addition to signing this petition, we would ask that you consider contacting your state representatives to voice your support for this key legislation. Call or email your elected officials to vote in favor of the food bank sales tax exemption.

Your voice can make a great impact!

Thank You!!
