The two-party system is broken. Yet the institutions that play a role in shaping our elections continue to do everything in their power to preserve a dysfunctional and corrupt two-party duopoly.
With two independent voices on the ballot for Iowa Governor this November, and public disgust with status quo politics, it is more important than ever to hear from more voices and more choices. A record 68% of voters say that the Democrats and Republicans have done such a poor job that we need a third party.
The Libertarian Party of Iowa just received major party status due to their performance in the 2016 Presidential Election. Their candidate for Governor, Jake Porter, has every right to be included in all general election debates. So does independent candidate Gary Siegwarth, who secured ballot access.
But the duopoly candidates -- Republican Governor Kim Reyolds and Democratic nominee Fred Hubbell -- agreed to participate in three exclusionary debates hosted by Iowa media organizations.
The voters of Iowa -- 37% of whom are independent (compared with 32% Republican and 31% Democrat) -- deserve to hear from all FOUR candidates on the ballot for Iowa governor.
Please sign and share this petition to the Des Moines Register, KCCI, KTIV, CBS, KTTC, KWWL, Quincy Media, NBC, KCRG, KWQC, the Quad City Times, and the duopoly candidates themselves -- Governor Reynolds and Fred Hubbell -- asking them to open up the October 10th, 17th & 21st Iowa gubernatorial debates to the Libertarian Party candidate Jake Porter and independent candidate Gary Siegwarth.
Tell them it’s not OK for them to exclude half the field, especially at this critical time for our republic.
We, the voters of Iowa, deserve to hear from all of our choices. #OpenTheIAgovDebates!
