Iowa Legislature: End Radon in Commercial Property Act
Radon, a toxic, colorless, odorless, radioactive gas, is the number 2 cause of lung cancer in the U.S. behind tobacco. It enters our homes, offices, hospitals, schools, nursing homes, grocery stores, and other facilities through cracks, holes, and any other openings. The whole state of Iowa is labled by the EPA as Zone 1, meaning Iowa citizens are at Highest Potential for exposure to elevated levels or radon. According to the American Lung Association: "The average indoor radon concentration in Iowa is 8.5 pCi/L. More than SIX TIMES the national average." Action needs to be taken!
The Daily Iowan article written by Nate Otjen states Rep. Bruce Braley, D-Iowa, introduced the End Radon in Schools Act Thursday. The bill, if passed, would “protect students, teachers, and school employees from high levels of radon in schools,” according to a press release from Braley’s office. What about our patients? What about our healthcare professionals?
As a future pharmacist, if I was to work in an Iowa hospital basement, I’d be inhaling more radon during my lunch break than at home.
We need to go BEYOND schools -- How about ALL commercial property! I ask that you consider and push for End Radon in Commercial Property Act.
