Hannah Soyer started this petition to Iowa Governor Iowa Governor Kim Reynolds

As someone with a compromised respiratory system, I am at an increased risk if I were to catch COVID19. I have many, many, many things left to do during my life, and it is absurd to me that my home state of Iowa has yet to issue a statewide stay at home order. Governor Kim Reynolds' continual refusal to issue such an order will cost lives, as the data has shown. Gov. Reynolds has said she's been strong and consistent in her encouraging Iowans to stay home; if this is the case, she needs to back it up with a statewide order.

In a press conference on Mon., March 30, Kansas Dept. of Health Secretary Dr. Lee Norman explained that if we are able to reduce the amount of movement among people by 45%, the time that it takes for the number of deaths from COVID19 to double goes from 3 days to 6.6 days. On top of this, the infectivity factor (meaning how many people one infected person will then go on to infect) drops from 4.6 to 2.5. “You don’t have to be a mathematician to understand that that is a very pronounced impact,” Dr. Norman said. I agree.

Kansas has already issued a statewide stay at home, along with 32 other states as of March 31. Another 10 states have various county-by-county orders. It’s time for Iowa to step it up.

Additionally, according to a model put together by CovidActNow.org, shelter in place/stay at home must be implemented in Iowa within the next week to prevent hospital overload. With no action, Iowa is looking at a greater than 70% infection rate, hospitals overloaded by Apr. 15, and 63,000 deaths. While this data is not meant to predict the future, it is certainly illustrative of what could happen if we do not take action now.

Governor Reynolds, do your part as an elected official to keep us all safe! Issue a statewide stay at home order now!
