Iowa waterfowl seasons are currently too early. Duck season is ending in the first 3 weeks of December depending on what zone you are in (north, central, south) and January for geese. They need to be pushed back to better match up with current migration patterns. This will allow waterfowl hunters to maximize opportunities within the federally regulated days of waterfowl seasons. Over the past month (January) significantly higher numbers of ducks and geese have been observed in the central zone as compared to the numbers observed during the early splits of our current seasons. Additionally, surrounding states that share our flyways have season dates that are set significantly later than ours which has led to better waterfowl hunting results. Better waterfowl hunting results would be beneficial to hunters as well as the State of Iowa due to attraction of non resident hunters who will pour money into Iowa’s economy, namely, the hospitality industry which has taken significant losses due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
