The iPhone and Samsung Galaxy are two of the biggest smart phones in Australia. Apple running iOS and galaxy running Android. Australia also has one of the largest smartphone penetrations in the world with an avergae of 3 devices per australian.

Both operating systems have national flags as emojis on their keyboards but currently do not have the Australian Indigenous flags in this software.

The Australian Indigenous people are the oldest living culture on this earth and sovereignty never ceded. We have a right to our own nationality that is rooted in our ancient customs and laws and represented with our own flag. Therefore to help in one small step towards recognition I am personally calling on Apple and Google inc to implement the Australian Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander flags into their software and work towards recognising indigenous cultures around the world.

Some would say symbols are not important in effecting real change. I disagree. Symbols represent so much more; language, culture, history and not including them denies our story as human beings. Enacting this small change will place pressure on governments to recognise indigenous peoples and ensure our heritage and culture is not lost.
