In the wake of international protest and condemnation of Russia's anti-LGBT legislation, the IOC has issued a statement that proactive political demonstrations and political 'propaganda' are in violation of Rule 50 of the Olympic Charter. Athletes and those involved in the Games are therefore at risk of being penalised or punished for any show of support for those suffering persecution under Russia's laws. We ask that the IOC consider its stance carefully and recognise its responsibility to uphold all the historic values and rules of its Charter, especially the Fundamental Principles of Olympism which call for 'mutual understanding with a spirit of friendship' and in Principle 6 declare 'any form of discrimination' as 'incompatible with belonging to the Olympic Movement'.
