Investigate Dan Snyder and the Washington Commanders
In 1997, a new stadium for the Washington Commanders (then named a racial slur) was constructed in Prince George's County, Maryland. Taxpayers paid more than $70 million toward the completion of the project, including construction of essential infrastructure like roads, power lines and sewers. That same year, longtime owner Jack Kent Cooke passed away, putting the team in a temporary trust while it underwent the process of being sold.
In 1999, Daniel Snyder purchased the team and for more than 20 years, the team's on field performance has been marked by futility, instability and personnel chaos. The atmosphere within the organization off the field has been even worse. More than 40 women have come forward and credibly accused Snyder directly and other executives of the Commanders of sexual harassment, sexual assault and the creation of a traumatic and toxic workplace culture.
The criminal conduct may not be limited to these offenses. On April 12, 2022, the Washington Post reported that there was concrete evidence presented by a whistleblower to the who was a long-time team executive that Snyder ordered and engaged in criminal activities including money laundering, fraud and illegally breaching contracts with season ticket holders, many of whom are undoubtedly residents of Prince George's County.
Amidst all of this, the team is actively seeking public financing up to $1 billion dollars for the construction of a new stadium. The revolting hypocrisy knows no bottom.
The team conducts a lot of its activities in Prince George's County and falls under their legal jurisdiction. We, the signers of this petition, are demanding that Prince George's County State's Attorney Aisha Braveboy open an investigation into the financial practices of this team and the harassing behavior of its staff members.
It is bad enough that Prince George's County subsidized a stadium for a near-billionaire owned football team a quarter century ago. That organization has potentially morphed into a criminal organization and we demand accountability for the conduct of its owner and executives.
