Invest more in public transit

As you may remember, last December, the House passed the Jobs for Main Street Act, HR 2847, which allocates $27.5 billion to highway infrastructure investments, and only $8.4 billion for public transportation. However, a new analysis of federal stimulus spending by Smart Growth America, the Center for Neighborhood Technology and US Public Interest Research Groups, PIRG, confirm that investment in public transportation produce twice as many jobs per billion dollars as highway projects do. When the Senate takes up this bill, it must allocate funds equally to public transportation and highways. This will create the equivalent of year-round employment for nearly 6000 additional workers without spending a dime more than the House bill. Please, use this opportunity to slow global warming, stimulate the economy and fight unemployment by expanding mass transportation within and between our cities, now.
