Invest in WA writing and publishing

Western Australia’s writing and publishing sector has nurtured many nationally and internationally acclaimed writers and illustrators, and produced hundreds of books that have been honoured with countless awards and nominations. Our literature has inspired the imaginations of readers globally.

Yet despite this success, the level of State Government investment in writing and publishing is far less than for other art forms.

The creators and professionals working within Western Australia’s writing and publishing sector are dismayed by the persistent under-valuing of our literary culture and the missed opportunities that this represents for our state.

What Do We Want?

  • Recognition in government policy, and through increased funding, of the potential of writing and books to deliver significant outcomes to our culture, economy and society.
  • Recognition, through increased funding, of the value of small-to-medium sector organisations in the development of emerging writers and sector practitioners.
  • Reinstatement of funding to the sector’s peak body — writingWA  — and a commitment to retain the peak body as an entity independent of government.
  • Reinstatement of the WA Premier’s Book Awards to an annual basis and with increased funding to enable greater community engagement.

If you are a writer, an illustrator, publisher, editor, bookseller, reader and/or supporter of Western Australian literature and would like to see stronger representation for our sector in State Government cultural policy and investment, please sign this petition.
